BTN will feature Gable Tuesday night::Eastern Iowa Sports and Rec

BTN will feature former University of Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. (Iowa time) as part as its Big Ten Icons special. The legendary competitor and coach, a native of Waterloo who competed at Iowa State University, is one of 12 coaches highlighted, including former Indiana University men?s basketball coach Bobby Knight and Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.?

BTN TO FEATURE LEGENDARY COACH TUESDAY AT 7 P.M.

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Former University of Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable will be featured Tuesday at 7 p.m. (CT) on Big Ten Icons on BTN. The episode, presented by Discover, is the second of 12 installments of the series, hosted by Hall of Fame broadcaster Keith Jackson. The Big Ten Icon series profiles one coach from each Big Ten university.

Gable led Iowa to 15 national titles and 21 Big Ten championships in 21 seasons from 1976-1997. He compiled a career record of 355-21-5, coached 152 All-Americans, 106 Big Ten Champions, 45 national champions, and 10 Olympians ? including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists.

During his tenure, the Hawkeyes averaged more than 17 wins and just one loss per season and posted a 95-1 record in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Gable retired as Iowa?s head wrestling coach in 1997. He later held the position of Assistant to the Athletic Director before retiring from that post Dec. 31, 2010. The Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships from 1973-1998, 21 while Gable was a head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator.

Other Big Ten Icon coaches include Lou Henson (Illinois), Bob Knight (Indiana), Bo Schembechler (Michigan), Jud Heathcote (Michigan State), Herb Brooks (Minnesota), Tom Osborne (Nebraska), Kelly Amonte-Hiller (Northwestern), Woody Hayes (Ohio State), Joe Paterno (Penn State), Gene Keady (Purdue) and Barry Alvarez (Wisconsin).
